Major Shift for NFL Playoffs

November 11, 2020 By AM 1530 WCKG

A major shift is coming for this year’s NFL Playoffs, as the league says they will expand the playoffs to 8 teams from both the AFC and NFC.

Illinois Sports Gambling - Sportbook Radio Chicago_WCKG

Clay Travis is reacting to some news out of the NFL that the league will expand the playoffs to 8 teams from the AFC and 8 teams from the NFC if there happen to be games that get cancelled at some point this season.

Clay and the Outkick crew all believe that at some point there will be at least one game that gets cancelled due to COVID. If they are right, then this new 8 team playoff expansion will be implemented.

If it does get implemented, Clay believes that it will be significant in a number of ways. First off, there would be no byes at all. As we stand currently, the Steelers and the Saints are the two No. 1 seeds in their conferences. This new rule would force every single team to win 3 games in order to make it to the Super Bowl.

In ordinary years, the top 2 teams in each conference get a bye week to start off the playoffs, but in this scenario, no team would get byes, and Clay argues that this, combined with essentially no home field advantage for anyone, will offer significant changes in this year’s playoff picture in the NFL.
