WATCH: Mahomes and Mayfield’s record shattering 2016 matchup might be the greatest shootout in CFB history

September 28, 2018 By AM 1530

Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield are two of the biggest stories from the young NFL season, and if their college football record shattering 2016 matchup while they were slinging it at Texas Tech and Oklahoma is any indication, it’s gonna be a show when they meet up for the first time in the NFL.

For those that might have forgotten, or missed it, Mayfield and Mahomes combined for an NCAA record 1,383 combined total yards from two players when they met up in an October Big 12 shootout in Lubbock, and broke a boatload of school and NCAA records.

The stat line reads like a Madden game set on pro with 12 minute quarters. Mayfield ended up on top, 66-59, and threw for 545 yards on 27 of 36 passing with a school record 7 touchdowns.

Mahomes tossed for an NCAA record-tying 724 yards on a cartoonish 52 of 88 (!!) with 5 TD’s and a pick. Mahomes also rushed 12 times for 85 yards, which gave him the NCAA record with 819 yards total yards from scrimmage.

The highlights may be the most entertaining offensive highlights in the history of college football.

Even though he took the loss, here’s Mahomes record setting night. Maybe this is the film that sold Andy Reid. Looking back on his first 3 weeks of the NFL season it looks a massive flashing billboard saying “Draft ME!”

As for Mayfield,  545 yards and 7 TD’s on 35 attempts is about as ruthlessly efficient performance as you’ll ever see. Colin would probably point out that the red Raider defense is trash and he had better offensive personnel (Joe Mixon went bananas), but it’s still impressive.
