Julian Edelman and Sean McVay Played Against Each Other Twice in College (Video)

January 22, 2019 By AM 1530

Sean McVay and Julian Edelman are both 32 years old, but reside on the opposite ends of the age spectrum in their respective positions of employment. The two will meet in the Super Bowl in a coach vs. player showdown, but they’ve met on a football field as players back in college.

Both Edelman and McVay are MAC veterans and played twice while Edelman was the QB or Kent State and McVay was a fairly productive receiver with Miami of Ohio. The games were a split, with Edelman leading the Golden Flashes to a win with a 260 yard passing day and a score in 2006, and Miami winning 20-13 in 2007, despite 93 Edelman rushing yards and 260 through the air. McVay had 4 catches for 47 yards in 2006 and 3 for 37 in 2007 as a Miami wideout.

The rubber match in this series obviously has a little more on the line than homecoming in Oxford.

The only footage we found is from the 2007 game, but here are a couple of highlights from both. Two guys headed for NFL stardom crossing on different paths to NFL stardom is always an interesting moment in the space-time continuum.

McVay only had three catches, but did make a nice 23-yard grab to get Miami into scoring position. The announcers reference his family’s NFL credentials during the replay:

Edelman didn’t find the endzone, but made a nice little scramble here. Belichick saw something he liked while Jules was running for his life on a weekly basis and running the read-option for the Golden Flashes:
