Game of Thrones Author/Hardcore Giants Fan George R.R. Martin Hated the Daniel Jones Pick

April 30, 2019 By AM 1530

As Game of Thrones dominated Sunday night TV like an NFL game, but author George R.R. Martin – who wrote the novels on which the series is based –  had other things on his mind besides how the slaying of the Night King was received. He was focused on the NFL Draft like the rest of us.

You see, Martin may be swimming in piles of cash from the record breaking series based on his novels, but he’s also a huge Giants fan, and like many from Big Blue nation, wasn’t happy about GM Dave Gettleman drafting Duke QB Daniel Jones with the 6th overall pick.

On his football only blog, Martin broke down why he hated the Jones pick with the savvy of a bearded version of Mel Kiper. He wrote:

“[Jones] would have been there at 17. Why not take Josh Allen or one of the other defensive studs at 6, and Jones at 17?   Makes much more sense. Who else was going to nab him? The Skins? The Skins preferred Haskins, that was common knowledge. Everyone in the world except the G-Men preferred Haskins, so far as I can see.”

He also wasn’t happy with the Giants using the 17th pick – acquired from Cleveland in the Odell Beckham trade – to select Clemson defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, who Martin sees as similar to former Pro Bowl D-tackle Snacks Harrison, whom the Giants cut last season. The shade is strong.

“[Lawrence] sounds like Snacks Harrison to me. Who the Giants cut in mid-season because… ahem… ‘all he did’ was stop the run, he didn’t get sacks. After his release, Big Blue spent the rest of the season getting gashed by runs right up the gut. Had to fix that. So to fill the Snacks hole, we draft Young Snacks. All it cost us was a Hall of Fame receiver.”

Don’t let Martin’s mega hit based on magic and dragons fool you. At his core he’s really just a hardcore, NFL Draft loving fan, who hates his teams picks. Just like the everyone else.
