Colin: NFL teams making a mistake chasing the next Sean McVay

January 9, 2019 By AM 1530

The NFL is known as a copycat league, and this offseason has teams scrambling to attempt to find their Sean McVay. The 32-year-coaching prodigy has been anointed as the next NFL coaching genius and has lit up opposing defenses after coming out of nowhere to get the Rams job, but Colin thinks NFL teams trying to find the “next” McVay are making a big mistake.

Arizona, Cleveland and Green Bay have all hired young, offensive minded coaches with no head coaching experience – with Arizona even touting Kliff Kingsbury’s friendship with McVay – but expecting them to make the same splash as McVay is wishful thinking because coaches like him aren’t just coming off the assembly line.

Even though young coaches are the hot trend, of the 8 coaches currently remaining in the Playoffs, 7 are over the age of 50. Colin thinks experience still matters when it comes to running an NFL team, and loved the Bucs hiring of Bruce Arians. The other hires, not so much.

“All you Cleveland’s, Arizona’s and Green Bay’s you’re chasing the exception, Sean McVay. The rule is 7 of the 8 coaches who remain in the NFL this weekend are 50 or older.” — @ColinCowherd pic.twitter.com/8MHMpKUyes
