Colin: Giants owner can’t blame OBJ for passing on Sam Darnold

October 17, 2018 By AM 1530

Eli Manning is no longer a functional NFL starting quarterback, and Odell Beckham has become especially vocal about it in the media, so much so that team owner John Mara clapped back that he wished Beckham would make more headlines on the field than through the press.

Colin understands Mara’s frustration after a disappointing 1-5 start, but Odell Beckham popping off is nothing new or unexpected and he isn’t the root cause of his organization’s dysfunction. The real problem is that ownership lacked the courage to kill the Eli Manning era and draft Sam Darnold when they had the chance. Darnold has the talent deficient Jets at 3-3, and the vibe and the culture are all positive and headed upward. Saquon Barkley has been brilliant, but that doesn’t win games or dictate culture.

New York’s only hope is that they are so bad they unintentionally luck into another shot at Manning’s replacement in next year’s draft. They could be in competition for the #1 pick and Oregon’s Justin Herbert at this rate. They’re currently tied for the worst record in the NFL with the Cardinals, Niners, Colts and Raiders.

“The owner John Mara is upset, but this could all be alleviated if Sam Darnold was a New York Giant… Saquon Barkley changes stats, he doesn’t change outcomes.” — @ColinCowherd pic.twitter.com/6nzmyFIpUs
