A Look at Life Inside El Chapo’s Colorado Super Max Prison Home, Described as ‘Life After Death’

February 14, 2019 By AM 1530

Juan “El Chapo” Guzman is looking at life in prison after being convicted on 10 criminal counts related to his international drug trafficking ring. Once Guzman is sentenced he’ll likely become an inmate at the ADX Super Max Federal Prison in Florence Colorado, and a former warden of the prison says it’s worse than the death penalty.

Although there are only around 400 inmates at the facility, they include some of the most notorious criminals over the last generation including the Unabomber, the Shoe Bomber, the 20th 9/11 hijacker, Oklahoma City bomber Terry Nichols, and Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev .

In an interview ahead of Tzarnaev’s sentencing, former ADX Warden James Hood described the conditions as “life after death.” Prisoners are kept on 23-hour solitary lockdown with only one hour of supervised recreation in cages. El Chapo will face identical conditions.

El Chapo has a history of breaking out of prisons, but it looks like the chances of that happening in the prison that sits in an isolated part of the Rockies is impossible. Not one single prisoner has escaped from the Alcatraz of the Rockies” since it opened in 1994.
